Hello all!,

Gwyn and I went to Raccoon Island last year in Florida off the coast of Miami. I’ve been meaning to mention it, because it was a really fun day trip for us. We drove around 4 hours from St Petersburg to the outskirts of Miami and rented a canoe from Oleta River Outdoor Center to paddle over to the island.

We had to paddle past some large yachts, and party boats since it happened to be spring break. It was a little tough paddling from the main land to the island across some of the open water, but it was definitely worth it once we found the local wildlife.

Gwyn and I spent an hour or so hanging out on the shore before we decided to explore the island, and after exploring about 45 minutes we started seeing the raccoons. The ones we found were closer to the other side of the island, where the boats were anchored and having cookouts. I will say, if you decide to go, be sure to bring some closed toed shoes. It’s Raccoon Island, but I think one of the other names of the Island is “Trash Island”.

I think from the currents in the area, and trash that hits the water from the city and surrounding areas, it tends to wash up on the island. It’s not overwhelming, but it seems like a good idea to mention it to whomever reads this post.

If you get a chance to go, give the island a visit.

Over and out,

Whit
